From 20 to 23 May 2020, the Netherlands Association for European Law (NVER) has the honour of hosting the XXIX Congress of FIDE, the biggest and most important conference for jurists in the field of European Union law.
The conference will be held in the Hague, the international city of peace & justice. Approximately 550 specialists in EU law will gather to discuss the most recent developments in EU law. A diverse range of participants will be present, deriving from legal academia and practice on national and European level: lawyers, judges and civil servants. High level debate is combined with the opportunity to meet with colleagues in a more informal setting. Key-note speakers include the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union Koen Lenaerts, the President of the General Court of the European Union Marc van der Woude, First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans and Laura Kövesi, the European Chief Prosecutor.
The following topics are central to this edition of FIDE’s congress and will be discussed in depth by highly regarded specialists in the field:
- Topic 1: National Courts and the Enforcement of EU Law – the pivotal role of national courts in the EU legal order
- Topic 2: The new EU Data Protection Regime – setting global standards for the right to personal data protection
- Topic 3: EU competition law and the digital economy – protecting free and fair competition in an age of technological (r)evolution
The rich variety of country reports, which are prepared by numerous national rapporteurs, will foster the debate and provide comparative perspectives. These insights are most relevant for the development of the European law. Participants are invited to actively contribute to the discussions in the working group sessions.

Après presque 40 ans, le congrès biennal de la Fédération Internationale pour le Droit Européen (FIDE) revient aux Pays-Bas. Du 20 au 23 mai 2020, l’Association Néerlandaise de Droit Européen (NVER) a l’honneur d’accueillir à La Haye plus de 450 spécialistes du droit de l’Union pour la vingt-neuvième édition de cet événement « incontournable » du droit de l’Union.
Lors du congrès de la FIDE, le monde du droit de l’Union se réunit pour discuter de l’état de ce droit tant à l’échelon européen qu’à l’échelon national. Les congrès de la FIDE réunissent les universitaires et les praticiens, avec le soutien et la participation active de membres de la Cour de Justice de l’Union européenne. Des débats de haut niveau se combinent avec l’occasion de rencontrer, dans un cadre informel, d’autres professionnels du droit de l’Union.
Les principaux sujets qui seront abordés lors du vingt-neuvième congrès ont été soigneusement choisis afin de faire naître des discussions fécondes et profondes sur des questions importantes de droit de l’Union. Ces questions concernent également des défis de taille dans la société et l’économie européennes :
Sujet 1 : Les juridictions nationales et l’application du droit de l’Union – le rôle central des juridictions nationales dans l’ordre juridique de l’Union
Sujet 2 : Le nouveau régime de l’Union de protection des données – l’énonciation de normes mondiales pour le droit à la protection des données personnelles
Sujet 3 : Le droit de la concurrence de l’Union et l’économie numérique – la protection d’une concurrence libre et non faussée à l’heure d’une (r)évolution technologique)
